Just as triathlon consists of three separate disciplines combined to create a unique sport, our coaching philosophy consists of three components combined to foster confident, happy and healthy athletes.  These components are...

Physical Fitness

Endurance fitness is attained through many hours of consistent and properly measured exercise.  Northwoods coaches employ mainstream and contemporary methods for designing training plans that allow athletes to reach their full potential without experiencing burn out.  Plans are designed using the concept of periodization, in which exercise volume and intensity vary depending on whether the athlete should be stressing their body to provoke physical adaptation, or resting their body to allow for recovery and repair.

Nutrition

Training for endurance sports places physical demands on the body that are different from those experienced under a sedentary lifestyle.  Proper timing and quantity of hydration, calorie consumption and macronutrient distribution are important for an endurance athlete to prepare for and recover from workouts.  Although Northwoods coaches are not registered dietitians, we can provide non-theraputic guidance for healthy athletes who want to get the most out of their training efforts.

Psychology

Nothing is more important to a successful training regimen and race experience than a positive state of mind.  Training and racing should be safe, fun and rewarding.  Northwoods coaches encourage their athletes to excel by setting achievable goals and visualizing success.  Participating in endurance sports is physically and mentally demanding, but not beyond the capabilities of anyone who truly wants to do it.
